Pre-dawn storms pound parts of Lexington County

July 21, 2016

Lexington, SC – Pre-dawn storms that included some heavy rains, high winds, and sharp lightning struck Lexington County before dawn on Thursday.  The storms travelled from the west toward the southeast causing problems for Lexington County’s fire and EMS crews and law enforcement officers working the overnight shifts.

Lightning is believed to have been the cause of a house fire on Merry Drive off Payne Lane northwest of Lexington on Lake Murray. One of the bedrooms of the home was burning when county firefighters arrived on the scene. En route to the fire, crews encountered trees down across the road in the vicinity of Beechcreek Road and Hallmark Drive in that area. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control quickly. Lexington County 911 dispatchers notified DOT officials of the trees and other debris in the streets so that they could respond and clear those hazards quickly.

Fire units from Lake Murray, Lexington, Gilbert, Hollow Creek, Red Bank, and other county fire stations responded to the call. A ladder truck was moved from Oak Grove into Red Bank to cover empty fire houses because South Congaree and Edmund were both out on other emergencies as well.
