Update on Interstate 26 Eastbound Bridge Deck Repairs
Newberry, SC - Crews were securing the installed rebar Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 2, on the Interstate 26 eastbound bridge deck under repair in Newberry County. Concrete is scheduled to be poured tonight, weather permitting.
Because only one lane eastbound remains open, periodic traffic congestion, heavy at times, is expected. Motorists should plan ahead and consider alternate routes by using interstate exits such as 72, 74 or 76.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) began emergency bridge repairs Sunday, July 31. The right lane of I-26 eastbound is closed for approximately 2.5 miles beginning at mile marker 81.
The speed drops from 70 mph to 45 mph in the work zone. Motorists are advised use caution when traveling in the work zone for their safety and the safety of highway workers.
Cracking caused by deterioration of aging infrastructure of the bridge deck was found during a routine inspection by SCDOT bridge engineers.
The SCDOT contractor is working around the clock to repair approximately a 450-square foot section of bridge deck. Completion of repairs is expected on Friday, Aug. 5, barring delays due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
Road conditions can be monitored by SCDOT’s 511 Traveler Information System: http://www.511sc.org/with a free app available.
