Lexington, SC – A two car crash claimed one person near Lexington High School Friday evening. The first call regarding the tragedy came in at 7:18 p.m. from the scene.
Callers to the 911 center reported a two car collision on Augusta Road near Olde Farm Road close to the Lexington High School campus. Firefighters, EMTs, and law enforcement officers immediately responded. When they arrived they found the two vehicles, one of which had overturned, scattered around the highway.
According to Lance Corporal David Jones of the SC Highway Patrol, both vehicles were headed north on Augusta Road when the operator of a Jeep SUV dropped off the right side of the pavement. That driver overcorrected, came back onto the highway, and struck a pickup truck being operated by a Lexington woman. The SUV then rolled over which caused its driver to be ejected.
EMS personnel assisted by firefighters treated the injured on the scene of the crash before transporting to a local hospital. The driver of the Jeep, who was the person ejected, later died as a result of her injuries.
The name of the deceased driver has not yet been released by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. This should be done sometime Saturday after that individual’s family has been notified.
The crash remains under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol and Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher’s office.
