Several serious accidents occur within moments of each other in southern and central Lexington County

October 13, 2016

Gaston / Red Bank, SC – A motorist struck a pedestrian and then fled from the scene last night on Hwy. 321 S in the town of Gaston. The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of West Ballpark Road and Hwy. 321 south.

Witnesses reported that the person walking was hit by a driver and knocked to the ground. That driver then sped away, leaving the injured person along the side of the highway.

Lexington County 911 personnel dispatched the fire service and EMS and also notified law enforcement of the incident. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and found the injured person in the ditch. The first responders rendered aid to the injured pedestrian and continued to assist the EMS crew after their arrival.

The pedestrian was transported to a local medical center for treatment of the injuries that were received as a result of this incident.

A short time later, units from the South Congaree fire station and EMS crews were dispatched to a call for assistance after a vehicle struck a moped in the 4700 block of Platt Springs Road just west of the Ramblin Road intersection. Callers advised that the car had run over the moped and its rider.

Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and began to treat the rider who was seriously injured. When EMS personnel from the county arrived on scene, they continued that care and prepared the patient for transport.

A firefighter drove the ambulance to the trauma center at Palmetto Richland so that the EMS crew could focus on the care of the patient. This is standard operating procedure when the injured person’s condition requires advanced care, as is the case in a traumatic injury such as this.

As of this writing, there has been no update on either patient’s condition. SC State Troopers are investigating the cause of both of these crashes.
