Fairview, SC – A pedestrian that was apparently removing some wood debris from the highway was struck and killed by a car on Fairview Road near Steadman Road in the western portion of Lexington County last night. The accident happened at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Fairview Road is also known as US Hwy 178. It runs between Pelion and Leesville in that part of our county.
According to a spokesman for the SC Highway Patrol, a man from Augusta, Georgia was driving a late model Ford Mustang when he struck the man that was out on the road’s surface. The trooper said that the man that was killed was not wearing reflective material that would have made him easily visible to motorist.
Although county EMS personnel and firefighters responded to the accident, the man died on the scene as a result of the catastrophic injuries that he received in the wreck. The highway was completely closed for some time and officers were making motorists detour around as they performed their investigation.
The highway patrol released no indication as to where the wood products that were in the road originated from.
An autopsy will be performed by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death. Troopers have said that the name of the victim would be released by the coroner’s office after the notification of the next of kin is released.
