County of Lexington: Recycle Your Used Cooking Oil This Thanksgiving Holiday!

November 22, 2016

Lexington, SC - How do you properly dispose of cooking oil after you are done cooking?

The answer is simple: Recycle it!

But what does that mean? When you fry that turkey for Thanksgiving, or that chicken for Sunday dinner, it might be easy to toss oil in the woods or down the drain. If it went down the drain, it could contaminate water lines, plumbing or septic system. When waste cooking oil is dumped in the backyard, it seeps down into the natural waterways which will harm fish and other aquatic life.

So what do you do with that nasty grease? Is there an easy solution that won’t cost you time and resources? Yes.

This is the era of responsibility: You create it so recycle it! Use the Cooking Oil collection container at your nearest Lexington County Collection and Recycle Center.

Open – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 7AM-7PM; Sunday 3PM-7PM.

(Closed – Tuesday, Thursday, New Years Day, 4th July, Thanksgiving, Christmas)

Lexington County has partnered with Green Energy Biofuel, a local South Carolina business that recycles the waste grease into a sustainable, cleaner-burning biodiesel, which can be used in a diesel car or truck. The biodiesel is a non-toxic and biodegradable fuel produced from you eating that tasty chicken sandwich. Biodiesel could run the state’s entire fleet of school buses and public transportation, so help and recycle your cooking oil.

S.C. County Recycling Centers all over the state recycle waste cooking oil with Green Energy Biofuel: Allendale, Bamberg, Chester, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Dorchester, Fairfield, Greenville, Greenwood, Hampton, Kershaw, Laurens, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Richland!
