Career Expert Brooks Harper speaks at two District Five schools

January 5, 2017

CHAPIN, SC  – Career expert and author, Brooks Harper, visited The Center for Advanced Technical Studies and Chapin Middle School to speak with students and offer practical advice for pursuing the career of their dreams. It was an opportunity for students to hear real-world applications of the skills they are learning in school. Harper has written two career guidance books, Why Should We Hire You? and 7 Skills to Make Mill$, and has spoken to over 400,000 students, educators, and parents nationwide.

“It was a tremendous privilege to speak and share with students at The Center for Advanced Technical Studies and Chapin Middle School today!” said Harper. “The students were fantastic and receptive to turning learning into earning and their passion into paychecks.”

Harper spoke with students about soft skills and stretching themselves to achieve excellence. With over 15 years of experience in the corporate world, he shared humorous stories and illustrated how to make an impression during an interview. His advice to students ranged from asking for what you want, to building a personal brand. Students had the opportunity to ask career advice questions and a student told him, “You are a motivation to me.”

The South Carolina Department of Commerce sponsored Harper’s visits. Regional Workforce Advisor Dr. Kaye Shaw said, “Brooks Harper’s message to students encouraging them to develop skills and talents that will make them successful in life and work fits in perfectly with the needs of our Midlands workforce. Our business partners are looking for young people who demonstrate the ability to communicate well, thrive in a team-oriented environment, and show respect for themselves and others.”

Director of The Center for Advanced Technical Studies, Dr. Bob Couch, added, “It’s absolutely critical that we prepare our students for success in the classroom and in their careers. Having Mr. Harper speak helps give our students the tools they need to succeed.”
