Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – The SC Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred Sunday night in the city of Cayce in a quiet residential neighborhood.
According to information provided by the Cayce Department of Public Safety, officers responded to a call on Tufton Court early Sunday night. This is in the Concord Park area of the city off Taylor Street, southwest of the 12th Street Extension.
Department officials have said that when officers arrived on the scene and approached the home, a man pointed a gun at them. The officers immediately fired at the man, striking him with at least one round.
The front of the house was riddled with bullet holes that were visible from the street. The window in the front door was also shot out.
Officers from SLED were on the scene Sunday night and again Monday talking to the neighbors and taking statements from witnesses. It is standard operating procedure for most departments to turn over this type of investigation to the state.
The two officers that were involved in the incident were placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the SLED investigation. According to Cayce DPS officials, that is standard in these types of cases.
Cayce had another officer involved shooting last year. In that case, the officers involved were exonerated after a young man fired at a department field supervisor who was questioning him.
That man fired a shot from a pistol he had concealed in his waistband, almost hitting the sergeant who then gave chase and returned fire. Another officer who was assisting in that case was shot in the leg during the incident. He has since recovered.
