Truck wreck on I-20 near the 62-mile marker east near Lexington spills diesel fuel, disrupts commute

February 8, 2017

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – A tractor trailer truck jackknifed on I-20 near the 62-mile marker east bound just before 7:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. According to a Lexington County fire official on the scene, a substantial amount of diesel fuel leaked from the saddle tanks which were both believed to have ruptured during the crash.

Original reports indicated that an estimated 300 gallons of diesel fuel had leaked from the truck. Lexington County responded with fire trucks, EMS crews, hazardous materials units, and specially trained technicians to deal with the leak. Once they arrived, they quickly plugged the leaking tanks to stop the flow of the fuel.

The first arriving officer from the fire service requested that the SCDOT respond with sand trucks to help stop the spread of the spilled fuel that was already on the ground. He also quickly contacted the SC Dept. of Health & Environmental Control and requested guidance on how that agency wanted to proceed to minimize the environmental impact.

Traffic backed up quickly toward Lexington and law enforcement officers worked feverishly to reroute and clear the traffic. Within the hour, they had the traffic moving, albeit at a snail’s pace.

Several other accidents were reported by the SCHP in proximity to the wreck. Troop One's CRO, Trooper David Jones, took to Twitter urging motorist to slow down and use caution in the area as the number of accidents added up.

SC State Troopers and the SC Transport Police are investigating the cause of the crash They have not released any results of that investigation or if anyone has been charged as a result of the accident.
