Traffic Safety Enforcement Activities In Response To Collision Data

February 23, 2017

Lexington, S.C. (February 23, 2017) – Chief Terrence Green would like to advise the Town of Lexington community that the Lexington Police Department Traffic Division will be conducting traffic safety enforcement activities during the daytime hours on Monday, February 27 and Tuesday, February 28, 2017 in response to continued concerns of traffic collisions and the factors that continue to cause them to occur.

The activities during this two day event will include traffic enforcement saturation and a safety checkpoint within the Town of Lexington.

The locations for enforcement activities have been identified through statistical collision data, traffic studies, citizen traffic complaints, and will be focused on, but not limited to, the following areas:

· Town of Lexington School Zones

· Sunset Blvd. at Old Cherokee Road

· North Lake Drive at Old Cherokee Road

· North Lake Drive at Columbia Avenue

· South Lake Drive at Industrial Drive

Safety enforcement activities will focus on traffic speed in school zones, seat belt compliance, improper use of the median, disregarding traffic devices, speeding and aggressive driving, as well as texting while driving.

Chief Terrence Green says that “One part of the Lexington Police Department Strategic Plan is to lower the number of traffic collisions that happen daily on the Town of Lexington roadways. Each month collisions typically average around 120 and this puts too many drivers and their occupants at risk. There are contributing factors seen over and over in the collision data with following too closely, failure to yield the right of way, driving too fast for conditions, and drivers being distracted causing the majority of the collisions. Many of these crashes are preventable with alert and safe drivers behind the wheel.”
