Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) County firefighters are on the scene of a barn fire off Crystal Springs Drive near Bee Cliff Road between Pelion, Boiling Springs, and Edmund. The call regarding the fire came in at approximately 4:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Even before the first fire units from Edmund arrived, you could see the glow of the fire in the sky from some distance. Callers advised the dispatchers that the barn contained motorcycles and other equipment and that the fire was spreading to the woods around the structure. They also said they were hearing explosions as the flames consumed the building.
Edmund station was the first due fire unit. When they arrived, they discovered that the structure was fully involved, but was at the end of a long driveway up a rise, and atop a sandy hill. They proceeded in, a distance of approximately 1000’ of the paved road, and began to attack the fire from a defensive posture.
Eventually, additional equipment began to arrive from Sharpe’s Hill, Boiling Springs, Pelion, South Congaree, and other county fire stations. An EMS unit was also dispatched as was the sheriff’s department for safety and traffic control.
Firefighters were still on the scene of the fire at 6:00 a.m. As of that time, the fire had not been declared under control.
