Flames coming through the roof on arrival of Fairview Road fire

March 20, 2017

Fairview, SC (Paul Kirby) – Firefighters from across western Lexington County were dispatched to a residential fire early Monday morning in the 4500 block of Fairview Road. The first units were dispatched around 12:50 a.m. First arriving personnel reported that they had heavy smoke and flames coming through the roof when they pulled up.

County resources from Fairview, Samaria, Pelion, Boiling Springs, Gilbert, Lexington, Sharpe’s Hill, Edmund, and other stations responded. They were assisted by both equipment and manpower from the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department. Lexington County EMS had personnel on the scene and there were law enforcement officers at the fire because one lane of Fairview Road (US Hwy 178) had to be closed for tanker operations.

One of the county’s pumpers set up at the pond at Cedar Pond campground which is within a short distance of the fire. It was directed there in order to draw water from the pond to fill tanker trucks. These tanker trucks shuttled water to the scene where another fire engine pumped it through the hoses for the firefighters to use while attacking the fire.

It took several hours to bring the fire under control. The battalion chief released the last trucks from  the scene and turned the property back over to its owner just after 4 a.m.

During the height of the fire, trucks and personnel were moved from other county stations to empty ones whose personnel were dedicated to the fire. A truck was moved from Mack Edisto into Pelion at one point, and a pumper and its crew was moved from Hollow Creek to Gilbert.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The total estimated damages to the property has not yet been released by the fire service.
