District Five elementary student named national finalist in Kidtrepreneur Search

IRMO, SC - Harbison West Elementary School fifth grader Gabrielle Goodwin has been named as one of 10 national finalists in the Barbara’s Bakery Kidtrepreneur Search. The winner will receive a $10,000 grant for their business and five finalists will win $500 and Barbara’s Cereals.

“I am so excited to be in the Barbara’s Bakery Kidtrepreneur Search top 10,” Gabrielle said. “I want to say thank you to all of the supporters who helped us along the whole journey. Let’s get some more, I mean a LOT more votes and win $10,000! This is all for you!”

Gabrielle is the co-inventor, president and CEO of GaBBY Bows, a company trying to solve the age-old problem of disappearing girls’ hair barrettes. The Double-Face, Double-Snap Barrette by GaBBY Bows won’t slip out of hair, so they secure girls’ hairstyles and give moms peace of mind. GaBBY Bows are engineered to prevent hair slippage and work for all hair types. In just three years of business, more than 17,000 packs of GaBBY Bows have been sold.

At the age of seven, Gabrielle began selling her invention online. She is engaged in all aspects of the business, from inventory to speaking at trade shows and school assemblies, career days and commencement ceremonies, to helping with sales taxes and writing thank you notes to every customer who orders barrettes online. In 2015, Gabrielle was named a South Carolina Young Entrepreneur of the Year, the youngest to ever receive this award.

Gabrielle’s mother Rozalynn has been amazed by her daughter’s drive and passion for her company since day one and was all smiles when asked about her latest achievement. “Gabrielle’s dad and I are so proud of her becoming a national finalist in the Barbara’s Bakery Kidtrepreneur Search,” Rozalynn said. “Witnessing her growth in confidence over the past three years has been the most rewarding part of this journey. We are grateful our Midlands family is rallying behind Gabrielle to help make her dream come true!”

Barbara’s Bakery was created in 1971 in California and offers whole grain breads, cereals, snack bars, cookies and cheese puffs. The company was created by Barbara Jaffe, who was 17 years old when she started Barbara’s as a small organic bakery. The Barbara’s Kidtrepreneur Contest aims to recognize exemplary kids who strive to make the world a better place through their unique ideas and ventures.
