Mid-day fire destroys mobile home near Sandhills schools and Swansea
Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – A mid-day fire destroyed a singlewide mobile home on Lewis Rast Road close to District Four's Sandhills schools around mid-day Wednesday. Fire crews responded from Swansea, Sandy Run, Gaston, Sharpe’s Hill, South Congaree, Mack Edisto, and other county fire stations.
Even before the first firefighters arrived on the scene, police officers working in the area reported seeing a heavy column of black smoke rising from the general area. When the first fire apparatus arrived, they found that the small home was burning from end to end.
A rural water shuttle operation was put into place to supply the firefighters with water. This was necessary because of a lack of fire hydrants in the vicinity of the home.
A crew from Lexington County EMS was on the scene providing safety checks and helping to rehab firefighters. This is standard procedure for fires considered “working” by commanders.
Crew from the utility company were requested to deal with charged power lines damaged by the fire. They responded and removed those as quickly as possible.
It took some time for the firefighters to bring the fire completely under control. The mop up and overhaul phase went on for several hours as the crews dug through the smoldering debris.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The home was a total loss.
