Car crashes into National Health Care on Sunset Boulevard Saturday morning

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A car left the road and slammed into a portion of the National Health Care building in the 2900 block of Sunset Boulevard Saturday morning. This is where Sunset and Hebron Drive come together, just west of the Lexington Medical Center.

National Health Care is a facility that provides a full range of extended health care services. These include skilled and traditional nursing care, as well as hospice and short-term respite care, according to the company’s website.

The fire service dispatched a fire truck out of Corley Mill station and their collapse units, as well as a battalion chief. Those carry special tools and equipment to shore up collapsing or damaged buildings.

The first due fire crews had trouble finding the car and the damaged portion of the building from Sunset Boulevard when they first arrived. A county deputy had already located the scene and said he had found the car that had hit the building in a manner he described as “hard.” That deputy was communicating with the 911 center via radio, and he quickly directed the emergency crews to turn down Hebron Drive where the car had crashed into the rear of the building.

Apparently the driver of the car was travelling along Hebron Drive when he somehow lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road. It then slammed into the building. Before the first due fire engine arrived, the staff at NHC had helped the patient get out of the vehicle, and they were rendering aid.

The building was quickly assessed and it was determined that no significant structural damage was done to the building itself. The collapse crews were quickly released to return to their quarters.

The reason that the driver lost control of the vehicle, and what, if any charges that he will face, have not been released by the SCHP. They are in charge of the investigation.
