Lexington School District One bus involved in minor accident that backs up Sunset Boulevard in Lexin

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) A Lexington County School District One school bus was involved in a minor, single-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon on Sunset Boulevard at Hope Ferry Road. It backed up traffic in both directions in the area that traditionally experiences traffic congestion even without an accident that blocks traffic or causes other drivers to slow to see what’s happened.

According to Mary Beth Hill, Chief Communications Officer for School District One, the driver of the bus was making a right hand turn off Sunset Boulevard (Hwy 378) to Hope Ferry Road when it made contact with a utility pole. The bus actually struck the pole on the side just to the front of the rear tires.

Traffic was so backed up that Lexington police officers that were responding struggled to get to the scene through the cars that were stopped. Eventually, one officer was instructed by a supervisor to activate her emergency warning devices and take to the median to get on scene and begin to unsnarl the mess.

The bus was carrying 65 to 70 students at the time. No one was hurt as a result of the minor mishap.

Although some parents picked up their students at the scene, most of the students were loaded onto other buses and continued home.
