Boat fire threatens home and garage near Chapin

Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) A boat was destroyed and a garage was threatened after the boat burned late Monday night. The fire was reported around 11:00 p.m.on Hiltonview Court near the lake out Old Lexington Highway.

Firefighters from the county’s Crossroads fire station were the first to be dispatched. While enroute, dispatchers advised them that the caller said that the boat was in proximity to the home and was well involved in fire. Because of this, the crew of the first due engine requested a structural response before they arrived on the scene.

When the firefighters arrived, they reported that the boat was fully involved and the fire was threatening a garage that was close by. They advanced their handlines and began to push the flames back away from the garage. Once they had sufficiently protected the structure, they began their attack on the boat itself.

Firefighters and equipment from Crossroads, Chapin, Amick’s Ferry, Lake Murray, Pine Grove, Lexington, and other county fire stations responded. The battalion chief also asked that a chief and an engine out of the Irmo Fire District respond to provide additional manpower as well.

Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. Much of the additional equipment that was responding was released to return to their quarters once the threat to the home was eliminated.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
