Former Lexington High star Demetris Summers pleads guilty to trafficking crack cocaine, sentenced to 8 years

April 14, 2017

Lexington, SC - Demetris Summers, a 33-year-old Lexington County native, was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined $50,000 for Trafficking, Manufacturing and Distributing Crack Cocaine throughout Lexington County. The sentence was imposed on Friday, April 14, 2017, by the Honorable Jocelyn Newman.

Sheriff Jay Koon and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department began investigating Summers during August of 2015. Agent Mike Merckle, of the Sheriff’s Narcotics Enforcement Team, covertly conducted multiple purchases of crack cocaine from Summers. A search warrant was then executed on his residence in Lexington County which revealed crack cocaine, powder cocaine and multiple firearms. Agents also recovered evidence that Summers was manufacturing crack cocaine at that address.

Summer was a phenomenal athlete and star football player at Lexington High School. He was the state of South Carolina's all-time leader in career rushing yards (9,076) and in career touchdowns scored (127), according to his bio on the official USC athletics page.

In 2003 he was one of the top freshmen in the SEC while playing for the USC Gamecock’s. He was named to the SEC Coaches All-Freshman squad, appeared in 11 games, with eight starts at tailback, and was the team's second leading rusher. That year, he caught a screen pass, and ran 37 yards for a touchdown against Georgia, a play which really got him more playing time during the remainder of that season.

Eventually, it all went bad. He began using drugs, failing drug test, and eventually had to leave the university. He began to rack up arrests, and those eventually led to drug convictions.

Assistant Solicitor Gill Bell prosecuted the case for the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
