Subcontractor employee killed in work related accident at Cayce steel plant
Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) A subcontracted employee has been killed in what is being called a workplace accident at CMC Metals in Cayce Thursday afternoon. The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m.
CMC, which is located at 310 New State Road, is a facility that makes steel that is formed into rebar, trusses, and other products. It has been a presence in the city for decades.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has now released the identity of the person who was killed as Corey Thomas Morris, 25, of Murrells Inlet, SC. Fisher said that he was a welder working on the site with another company; he was not an employee of CMC Metals.
Morris died at the scene from the injuries he received in the accident. Fisher went on to say that an autopsy will be performed on Friday, April 14, 2017 to determine the cause of death.
Details of the accident remain under investigation by the Cayce Department of Public Safety and CMC Officials. OSHA, the federal agency that oversees and regulates workplace safety policy and issues, is usually involved in serious workplace accidents as well.
