West Columbia Rd. has new turn lane to ease traffic

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – The SCDOT has reopened Alexander Road along the river in West Columbia after a new turn lane or median was added to ease traffic congestion. It had been closed since February and a detour routed traffic around in another direction.

Alexander runs from Knox Abbott Drive to Meeting Street and is the road that comes out right at the Gervais Street Bridge on the north end. On the other end, it comes out right at Parkland Plaza near a bank and a small convenience store. It runs parallel to the scenic Congaree River, a major draw for the development.

Property along the road has been redeveloped over the past years, and many new homes, as well as apartments have added to the number of motorists that travel the road every day. SCDOT officials hope that the new turn area will allow the cars to move more freely, and not be held up by people who are having to yield as they wait to turn left back in toward West Columbia and the county.

The barricades and signs were removed from the detour Tuesday afternoon, signaling the end of the project.
