Three people displaced after home catches fire in Batesburg Leesville

Batesburg / Leesville, SC – Batesburg -Leesville firefighters, assisted by crews from Lexington County fire and EMS, fought a house fire in the 500 block of Howard Street just before 3:00 p.m. Thursday. Howard runs across South Pine Street south of West Columbia Avenue.

When the first engine arrived, its crew found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the home. Firefighters immediately went on a defensive attack, pouring water on the fire from the outside. Once a water supply was established and more personnel arrived, they transitioned to an offensive attack. This usually means that the firefighters go inside, attacking the base of the fire in the home’s interior.

According to B & L Fire Chief Jay Hendrix, it took about thirty minutes for the crews to bring the blaze under control. They stayed on the scene for some time after that in order to extinguish the hot spots, mop up, and clean up.

Hendrix said that it appeared as if the fire started in the attic. He said that there was heavy damage to the second floor. No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Three people are without a home as a result of the fire, Hendrix said. The American Red Cross was notified so that they could provide assistance to them.
