Suicidal teen crashes truck, causes closure of Edmund Hwy.

April 28, 2017

Edmund, SC (Paul Kirby) – A distraught, suicidal teen wrecked a truck into a tree near the Edmund Fire Station Friday afternoon, causing traffic to come to a stop as police officers tried to coax her from the crashed vehicle. Officers from a number of law enforcement agencies assisted as the situation was being handled.

Apparently, a teen who was distraught took a family vehicle without permission, as well as her father’s handgun from their home. She began heading west on Edmund Highway heading toward Pelion from South Congaree for an unknown reason and to an undisclosed destination.

Officer Stone of the South Congaree Police Department was out at the Citgo station in town when the girl’s mother ran in distraught, and told him that the teen, the truck, and the gun were gone. She was hysterical and was pleading for help.

Almost immediately, the mother received a phone call from someone who had spotted the girl and the truck heading west. They were following her and reported that she had wrecked near the Edmund Hwy. and Old Orangeburg Rd. intersection. That individual reported that the girl in the truck had a cocked pistol pointed at herself and was threatening to end her life.

Officers from a number of agencies including the Lexington County Sheriff Department, and the SC Highway Patrol converged on the scene. Officers shut the highway at Pleasant View Drive on one end, and at South Lake Drive (SC 6) on the other.

Lexington County EMS and fire officials responded and stood by as the officers talked with the girl. Her family waited anxiously with officers nearby.

Eventually, deputies from the sheriff’s department, as well as other law enforcement officers, were able to safely remove the teen from the truck. She was handed over to EMS for transport to a medical facility.

The highway was reopened within the hour.
