Annual public safety BBQ and picnic draws a huge crowd as Lexington County Councilman Keisler and Caughman-Harman say thanks

May 4, 2017

Lexington, SC (Devin Ruiz) - On Wednesday, May 3rd, the annual Springtime Public Safety BBQ was held at Lexington County Council member Bobby Keisler’s beautiful residence in Red Bank. The picnic was co-hosted by Keisler, his family, and the employees of Caughman-Harman Funeral Home.

This picnic and BBQ is an annual show of appreciation for all the services provided to the community by people who work in the field of public safety every day. This includes firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, police officers, EMS workers, 911 telecommunicators, the staff that work in the court systems, SC State Troopers and transport police officers, and many, many others.

The staff of Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, along with a number of volunteers, catered the event, cooking the meal right on site. The meal is served at long, communal tables in the pond recreation house at Keisler’s home. It sits on the edge of a gorgeous pond that has a small dock and a spray fountain in its center.

Each year, abundant slow cooked BBQ chicken, onion sausages, baked beans, coleslaw, and rolls cover the tables. There’s always iced tea, water, and lemonade, as well as a number of cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats.

The guests included a who’s who of elected officials, public servants, and the front-line responders that serve the citizens of the midlands. Some of those in attendance this year were:Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher and her husband Clifford, 11th Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard, his Chief Deputy Solicitor Chris Samellas, Lexington County Council Member Chairman Todd Cullum,Councilmembers Larry Brigham and Scott Whetstone, Lexington County Joint Water & Sewer Commission General Manager Jay Nichols, their Intergovernmental Relations Manager Donna H. Peeler, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s Regional Captains Jen Burns, Kevin Howard, Hamp Taylor, Captain & PIO Adam Myrick, the department’s Majors J.J. Jones of the Law Enforcement Division, Major Bob Rolin of administration, and Major Kevin Jones of the Detention Bureau, Chief Deputy Greg Shockley, SUV Investigator Joe Hart, CAT Team Members David Nieves, Brock, and many others.

Irmo Fire District’s Chief Mike Sonefeld was there as were representatives from the Cayce Department of Public Safety, the West Columbia Fire Department, Springdale Police Department, West Columbia Public Works, Lexington County Public Works, and others.

Representatives from Lexington County’s Department of Public Safety that attended included EMS Chief Brian Hood, Chief Fire Marshal Robert Risinger, Chief Glenn Hollis, EMS Operations Office's Jason Hentz, several of the fire service’s battalion chiefs, and many of the front-line firefighters, captains, and engineers who drive and operate the equipment.

Chief Josh Shumpert of the South Congaree Police Department was there, as was Chief Billy Park of Pine Ridge, and Chief Terrance Green of Lexington PD. Major Matt Davis from Lexington and Lt. Eddie Robinson from Pine Ridge were also in attendance enjoying the food.

All of the assembled seemed to love the food, the drinks, the great weather, and the fellowship. Most of all, each expressed their gratitude for the hospitality shown by Councilman Keisler and the great folks at Caughman-Harman.
