Debris piles burning cause damage at salvage yard off Charleston Highway

May 23, 2017

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) Several piles of debris caught fire Monday afternoon and burned in a scrap metal and salvage yard off Charleston Highway near Cayce. The fire came just as heavy rains, lightning, and some high winds were moving into the area close to the Cayce Farmer’s Market and Frink Street.

Firefighters from Cayce, West Columbia, and Lexington County used aerial devices to pour water down on the fire. Large supply hoses stretched across the highway disrupted traffic for a short time, but officers re-routed drivers around those areas.

The operators of the salvage yard did have a piece of heavy equipment on the scene during the fire, and it was believed that they tried at one point to use it to separate the burning debris from the unburned portions of the yard.

Eventually, the fire was put out by the firefighters, helped by the heavy rains. It is not clear how much monetary damage there was as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire has not been released by fire service officials.
