First Lady of South Carolina Pays Special Visit to Dutch Fork Elementary School

May 27, 2017

IRMO, SC – Dutch Fork Elementary School received a special visit from the First Lady of South Carolina on May 23. Mrs. Peggy McMaster spent her morning reading to kindergarten students.

“What a thrill to see a magnet school in action! The Governor and I have talked about magnet schools and I was fortunate to spend an hour and a half in Dutch Fork Elementary School Academy of Environmental Sciences this morning,” McMaster said. “The children were polite, smiling, eager to learn, and glad to be there in a teaching environment that benefits future leaders with hands-on skills in geology, physics, chemistry, botany, farming and nature. For parents of young children, a visit to a magnet school would open your eyes to another education choice that is available to everyone.”

Mrs. McMaster read the classic The Poky Little Puppy, a children’s book that features a young bulldog. After she finished reading, the First Lady had a very special surprise for the students. In trotted the “First Dog” Mac, the McMasters’ bulldog puppy.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Mrs. McMaster could come and read with our students,” said Dutch Fork Elementary kindergarten teacher Emily Perkins. “What a great way to cap off a tremendous school year by having the First Lady take time out of her busy schedule to visit our awesome school.”

“Mac definitely stole the show, no doubt about it,” said Dutch Fork Elementary Principal Julius Scott. “The theme the First Lady brought along was a perfect way to tie in our magnet theme and show Mrs. McMaster what Dutch Fork Elementary School is all about.”

Following her reading, The First Lady took a tour of the school and was amazed to hear that second and third grade students from Dutch Fork Elementary had recently held a used book sale, where they were able to raise and donate $1,300 to a local animal shelter.

“Here at Dutch Fork Elementary School Academy of Environmental Sciences, we teach our students about caring for the world and doing things to help make our world a better place,” Scott said. “We know how much our Governor and the First Lady care about education, and this was such a great opportunity for us to showcase all of the great things our teachers and students do each and every day!”
