Fire destroys home near Boiling Springs and Edmund
Boiling Springs, SC (Paul Kirby) A home was gutted by fire Saturday night between the Edmund and Boiling Springs communities. The fire, which was reported around 10:00 p.m., was in the 300 block of Longview Street between Boiling Springs and Founders Road.
First arriving fire resources found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. Firefighters made their first attacks from defensive positions as their commanders began to put the resources in place to supply an uninterrupted rural water supply with fire hydrants absent. Telecommunicators did locate hydrants in that region through their computer aided dispatch resources, but the closest was more than 3,000 feet away, much too far for supply through conventional hoses. Eventually, as the water shuttle using tankers was established, trucks from as far away as Samaria were being used to shuttle water from the hydrants to the scene.
After the water supply was established and provenn and more manpower arrived on the scene, firefighters transitioned to a more aggressive attack. At that point, they were able to knock the fire down quickly. It was reported under control at about 11:30 p.m.
At one point during the fight, most of the manpower and equipment from the county’s central and western fire stations were committed to the firefighting operations on Longview. The second battalion chief moved additional equipment from other outlying stations to fill in and ensure that there weren’t areas of the county that would be without protection during the Longview fight.
As the fire was marked under control, the fire commander requested a sheriff’s deputy respond to make a report on the fire. He also asked for a fire investigator from the fire service due to some questions as to how the fire may have started.
The house is being considered a total loss.
