Coroner says child died as a result of burns in house fire Tuesday night

Lexington, SC - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has released the cause of death of six-year-old Aiyanna Shaw who died after firefighters drug her from a burning home Tuesday night on Old Dunbar Road near Cayce. The fire which occurred right at 10:00 p.m., was fought by multiple agencies including Lexington County, the Cayce Department of Public Safety, and the West Columbia Fire Department.

Coroner Fisher said that their autopsy findings confirmed that Shaw died as a result of thermal injuries (burns) that she sustained in the fire.. According to published reports, although other people were at the home at the time of the fire, Shaw was trapped and unable to escape.

The cause of the fatal fire is still under investigation by multiple agencies including SLED.
