IRMO – Nine students from Lexington-Richland School District Five have been announced as winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. All four high schools from District Five are represented.
These students include: Adam Abdulrahman (Chapin High, Clemson University Scholarship); Griffin Allen (Spring Hill High, University of South Carolina Scholarship); John Hume (Chapin High, Northwestern University Scholarship); Hannah Shaffer (Spring Hill High, Clemson University Scholarship); Vihar Dalal (Irmo High, University of South Carolina Scholarship); Rachel Dukes (Spring Hill High, University of Alabama Scholarship); Griffin Carter (Dutch Fork High, University of South Carolina Scholarship); Ben Garris (Spring Hill High, University of South Carolina Scholarship) and Christopher Yamashiro (Dutch Fork High, University of Oklahoma Scholarship).
“What an honor it is to have all four of our high schools represented in the National Merit Scholarship Program,” said District Five’s Chief Instructional Officer Dr. Christina Melton. “These nine students have so much to be proud of, and we commend them for all their hard work. This is a testament to the efforts our students put in, our engaged parents and our dedicated teachers we have here in District Five.”
These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July. To date, District Five has 14 students who have been selected as winners by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
“We congratulate these nine students for being named winners of these college-sponsored Merit Scholarships,” said District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner. “This is another incredible accomplishment that District Five can add to an already impressive list for the 2016-2017 school year. I know that these students have a very bright future ahead and we wish them the best as they move forward!”
