South Carolina School Boards Association Issues Statement on Governor's Veto of School Bus Funding

June 14, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina School Boards Association Executive Director Scott Price issued the following statement in response to Governor McMaster's veto of $20.5 million in funding for new school bus leases and purchases. The $28.9 million would pay for the purchase and/or lease of approximately 414 new school buses.

“The South Carolina School Boards Association is calling for the immediate override of Gov. Henry McMaster’s veto of funding for the crucial purchase of school buses. This is not an issue of debate when children are being placed on school buses that have a history of catching on fire, like the one carrying 56 Spartanburg County students who were fortunately able to escape their bus right before it was engulfed in flames. We cannot let another school year begin in a couple of months without taking action to ensure the safety of our students as they travel to and from school.

We believe that adequate and stable funding for purchasing school buses should be available on an annual basis if student safety is truly a priority. Although the source of funding in this year’s budget is one-time lottery funds, which may not be ideal, we have no alternative at this point in the budget process when students’ lives are at risk.”
