Lexington man drowns in pond on Sunday afternoon

Round Hill, SC (Paul Kirby) – A Lexington man drowned in a small pond behind a home near the intersection of Sparkleberry Lane and Roscoe Road Sunday afternoon. This is in the Round Hill area of Lexington County west of the I-20 and Longspond Intersection.

According to witnesses, the man was in the pond when he went under and never resurfaced. Others tried to go in after him, but the water was too deep for them to find and rescue him.

EMS and the fire service responded as did law enforcement. Eventually, divers were called in and they recovered the man’s body from the water.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the man as Donald Lee Byrd, 56, of Lexington. She said that an autopsy revealed that Byrd died of fresh water drowning.
