Grizzlies lose their growl as Blowfish swim by with a 2-1 win
LEXINGTON COUNTY S.C. — After a night off on Tuesday night, the Lexington County Blowfish looked to win their second straight after splitting a double header with Florence on Monday night. The Blowfish set their sights on the Gastonia Grizzlies at home and knocked them off 2-1 despite only knocking two hits in the game.
Gastonia got the scoring started in the third inning when Lawson McArthur (NC State) clubbed a leadoff double off the left center field wall. Two batters later, Chaz Davey (Erskine) plated McArthur with an RBI single that gave Gastonia a 1-0 lead. Blowfish pitching settled in from that point on.
Ryan Stoudemire (Charleston Southern) went five strong striking out five Grizzlies over his five innings of work and left with the lead after Lexington County smacked their second and last hit of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth.
After a Mickey Dugan (Gardner-Webb) leadoff walk, Riley Hogan (South Carolina) sent one deep into the night at Lexington County Baseball Stadium that landed deep into the trees in right field. The two run bomb gave the Blowfish a 2-1 lead.
Although Lexington County would only get one Blowfish to reach base safely from that point on, the Blowfish bullpen held the Grizzlies at bay throughout the remainder of the ballgame. Avery Greer (North Greenville) danced in and out of trouble in the sixth, tossed a clean seventh and handed over to Andrew Tilghman (Catawba) for the eighth.
The Grizzlies went down in order and couldn’t do anything against Hunter Dollander (USC-Aiken) in the ninth as the Blowfish snatched their second straight win.
Lexington County pitching fanned 12 Grizzlies as Stoudemire notched his second win and Dollander secured his first save.
Tomorrow night the Fish look for their third straight as they travel to McNair Field to take on the Forest City Owls. Coverage on z93.1 The Lake will begin at 6:45 and first pitch from Forest City is scheduled for 7:05.
