Pond Branch, SC (Paul Kirby) A home was destroyed by fire on George W. Lewis Road off Pond Branch near I-20 Thursday morning. A number of Lexington County fire stations responded to fight the fire that was coming through the home’s roof on arrival of the first fire crews.
Firefighters and equipment responded from as far away as South Congaree and Lexington to assist in fighting the fire. The first fire attack was made from the exterior until the fire could be brought to a point where it was safe to have crews enter the home. Water tankers were used to supply the pumper that was set up at the scene for the fire fight. This is necessary when fire hydrants are not close to the structure that’s on fire.
Eventually, firefighters and equipment were on the scene from Boiling Springs, Gilbert, Fairview, Samaria, Round Hill, Lexington, South Congaree, and Batesburg-Leesville, and several other stations. Trucks from Sharpe’s Hill, Pine Grove, and other stations were moved up to fill in status at empty fire stations.
The fire was brought under control in about an hour. It took some more time for the firefighters to finish mopping up hot spots and picking up their equipment. The county has estimated the damage to the home at approximately $80,000 and has said that two adults were displaced as a result of the fire.
