West Columbia firefighters battle house fire right after lightning storm Monday evening

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) Firefighters from the city of West Columbia, assisted by Lexington County, Cayce, and the city of Columbia, fought a house fire on Bonnie Street yesterday afternoon just as a heavy lightning storm passed through the area. First arriving crews reported that they had flames showing from the roofline of the home when they arrived.

Fire crews made a quick attack and knocked the fire down with the West Columbia teams backed up by the county and the firefighters from the other cities. They brought the fire under control in less than an hour, but were on the scene for some time cleaning up and ensuring there was no extension into other parts of the home.

An engine from the city of Columbia was moved to West Columbia Fire Department to stand-by while their crews were tied up on the fire. They were released once the West Columbia crews had the fire under control and were freed up to respond in case of another emergency.

The exact amount of damages done by the fire was not released by the fire department.
