Sheriff’s Department blood drive turns out to be a huge success

July 6, 2017

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Deputies and the citizens of Lexington County turned out yesterday in a big way to give blood in honor and support of a Lexington County Deputy who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident. In total, 87 units of blood were given at the blood drive that was held at the department’s headquarters on Gibson Road in Lexington.

Several months ago, Red Bank Resident Deputy Lance Thomas was riding his motorcycle near his home when the throttle cable malfunctioned causing the bike to careen out of control and hit a brick wall. He was transported to a local hospital where it was discovered that he had suffered major internal injuries that would require surgery. During that surgery and the subsequent care, Thomas had to be given lifesaving blood that was donated by someone else through the Red Cross.

The summervmonths often put a strain on the Red Cross’ blood supplies. People are so preoccupied with family events, vacations, and other distractions, that they forget that there is still the need for blood. For Deputy Thomas, it was a definite life saver as it is to thousands across the country!

In a video produced by the sheriff’s department, Thomas talks about the life-saving gift that he received in the blood donated by a complete stranger. You can see that video by clicking below.

The next blood drive in the area is at the Cayce West Columbia Chamber of Commerce office. It will be held on July 13 from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. That office is located at 1006 12th St. in Cayce, SC. This is just down 12th Street from the Cayce Krispy Kreme Donuts, back toward Triangle City.

As always, you can donate blood at the Red Cross headquarters at 2751 Bull St, Columbia, SC between 9 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
