Serious car crash occurs in subdivision off Platt Springs Road west of Red Bank

July 16, 2017

White Knoll, SC (Paul Kirby) – A vehicle accident that occurred in the 2100 block of Willow Fork Road ended with a small vehicle wrapped around a tree and at least one person seriously injured. Willow Fork Road is off Platt Springs Road near the two Carolina Springs schools, just west of White Knoll High. The first calls came in just before 10:00 p.m. Saturday night.

Witnesses on the scene and callers who were dialing 911 said that it appeared as if one person in the vehicle may have died on the scene. This has not yet been independently confirmed by the SCDPS or the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

After the original EMS and fire service equipment were dispatched, callers continued to communicate with the 911 operators and advised that at least one of the vehicle's occupants was trapped in the wreckage. This upgraded the amount of equipment and special resources that were dispatched and also added additional supervisors to the response.

It is unusual to see this severe of an accident inside the many small subdivisions that dot the area. Drivers normally keep speeds down in these areas because of the presence of children and families. The roads in these neighborhoods normally have few straight stretches that allow for a vehicle to pick up enough speed to cause serious damage in a crash. Most are also one way in, one way out, and are dotted with cul-de-sacs that would cause a vehicle to slow or run through dead ends into the homes or woods if they don’t.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating this accident. We will update this story as we learn more of the details of the wreck.
