South Congaree / Pine Ridge Library celebrates 10-years with party and children’s activities

South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – A large crowd gathered under a tent behind the South Congaree-Pine Ridge branch of the Lexington County Public Library Monday morning to celebrate the 10th birthday of that library. As a number of dignitaries gave short speeches, children of various ages played in the background, had their faces painted with designs, and enjoyed other activities planned by the staff.

Many of those in attendance, credited county council members Bobby Keisler and Todd Cullum, both newly elected when the library was built, with bringing it to the area. Through a partnership with state officials, and the donation of the land, the library was built near Congaree Elementary School and the Equestrian Arena to serve the citizens of the area.

Now, as the programs and activities at the little building grow and expand, and the amount of residents in the area increase, many officials in attendance said that it may be time to look at an expansion. In addition to housing books, magazines, and other print materials, the library has become a hub for the area’s population that can’t afford computers or internet services in their homes. It also is home to many programs aimed at helping to instill the love of reading and education in the students of the communities.

In addition to the wonderful staff that works daily at the branch, the library is supported by a large group of volunteers called the Friends of the South Congaree / Pine Ridge Library. This dedicated group of individuals supports much of what happens at the library with several annual fundraisers, as well as manpower when activities occur.
