Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) – An older mobile home burned Sunday afternoon off Augusta Highway. The fire, reported just before 2:30 p.m., was located where Evans Addy Road and Augusta Highway intersect. This is near the IGA between Leesville and Gilbert.
Firefighters responding to the call reported a heavy column of black smoke in the sky before they arrived on the scene. The county’s chief fire training officer was in the vicinity and was first to arrive at the fire. He immediately reported that there were access problems to the home that was burning. He also said that as much as 80% of the trailer was already involved and that it appeared as if it might have been abandoned or uninhabited.
Eventually, he was able to coordinate access to the older home with some of the first due equipment. Firefighters pulled their attack lines and began to pour water on the fire from the exterior. It took approximately an hour for them to extinguish the blaze.
The mobile home was a total loss. The county hasn’t released the cause or origin of the fire.
