Lexington County closes the living quarters at two fire stations due to air quality issues

August 2, 2017

Lexington County, SC - The Lexington County Fire Service temporarily closed the living quarters of Lexington County Fire Service’s Station 8, in Gilbert, and Station 14, in Fairview, after air quality issues were discovered following an air-quality test of the stations.

Although the living quarters of these two stations have been closed, Fire Service personnel currently operating out of these stations will continue to provide fire prevention and suppression coverage to the residents in these areas. Response times will be unaffected, as will the Fire Service’s ability to respond to calls for emergencies.

Fire Service personnel reported to County officials that condensation was accumulating on the ceiling tiles and light fixtures in the aforementioned stations. The County subsequently had an air-quality test performed at these stations.

The results of those tests indicated elevated mold-spore count levels in the living areas. With the advice of a third party consultant, County officials closed the living quarters of the stations to allow for the remediation process to begin in the immediate future.

The County has not received any reports or complaints of illness, health issues or health concerns from the Fire Service professionals assigned to these stations.

Temporary housing arrangements are being utilized to house the firefighters during their shifts until the remediation process has been completed.

“The health and safety of our first responders across the County is paramount to this Council,” County Council Chairman Todd Cullum says. “The County is working swiftly and diligently to begin the remediation process at these fire stations to ensure that our personnel have a safe, healthy and cultivating environment to work and live in.”
