St. Andrews, SC (Paul Kirby) An accident that involved multiple vehicles on I-20 at the I-26 overpass brought the east bound lanes of I-20 to a complete standstill Tuesday afternoon. Emergency units from both the Irmo Fire District and the City of Columbia FD responded, as did EMS units from two counties, state troopers, other law enforcement officers, and SHEP trucks and personnel.
First arriving fire equipment reported that there were several tractor trailers involved in the wreck and passenger vehicles as well. The emergency crews completely shut down I-20 east for a period as they attended to the people who were hurt and dealt with the vehicles that were involved. Traffic backed up for miles, and there were several other smaller accidents in the backup before the interstate could be reopened.
It took some time to untangle the mess and get all the vehicles involved moved out of the lanes of traffic. Heavy wreckers were used to tow the tractor trailers and that took some time as well. Eventually, the lanes were cleared and the traffic slowly returned to normal.
The cause of the wreck has not been released by the SCHP or the SC Transport Police. There is also no word on the extent of the injuries of the people who were involved in the crash.
