Lexington County man sentenced to prison for cocaine distribution

August 25, 2017

Lexington, SC - Marcus Antonio Mack, age 31, has been convicted by a Lexington County jury following a trial this week. Mack was sentenced to 15 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections for Distribution of Cocaine - 3rd Offense.  The sentence was handed down by Circuit Court Judge Robert E. Hood.

Eleventh Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard commented: “Prosecuting drug cases is extremely important in Lexington County. We have seen too many deaths and senseless killings all because of drugs. Drugs play a contributing factor in many of the violent crimes we have been prosecuting over the years.”

Evidence presented during the trial established that Mack sold a quantity of cocaine to a confidential informant working with the Lexington County Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET). Testimony from law enforcement showed that ongoing community complaints of drug activity in the Sumter Street area of West Columbia led to a coordinated multi-agency operation targeting drug dealers in the area.

This case was prosecuted by Eleventh Circuit Assistant Solicitors Melanie Graham and Gill Bell. Assistant Solicitor Graham remarked, “No war on drugs is more powerful than the one declared by community members who refuse to accept this kind of activity where they work and live.  Hopefully, sentences like the one handed down today send a strong message to the dealers who continue to torment our communities.”

Agents Scott Purdy and Mike Merckle with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department worked alongside Detective Jody Putney of the West Columbia Police Department throughout this case. Assistant Solicitor Gill Bell stated, “The hard work of the Lexington County NET Team continues to make our community safer.”

Mack was transferred to the S.C. Department of Corrections to begin service of his sentence immediately.
