Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A car left the highway and crashed into a pond near the intersection of Hwy. 321 south and State Pond Road Friday afternoon just before 5:30 p.m. Eventually, the car that was upside down sunk until just above the rear section and the tires were showing above the waterline.
According to eyewitnesses on the scene, they were in a home close to the pond when they heard the tires of a car skidding on the pavement. They looked to see what had caused the noise and saw the car was upside down in the pond and beginning to sink. A man stopped and assisted the young driver who escaped the car before it sank completely and the driver drowned.
The cause of the wreck remains under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol.
