Lexington County deputy shoots at man after confrontation near Leesville

Leesville, SC (Paul Kirby) – A spokesman for the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department says that a deputy has shot a man off Devil’s Backbone Road near Leesville Monday afternoon.

According to Captain Adam Myrick, a deputy was flagged down by a citizen about a suspicious person in the area. The deputy made contact with the subject in the 2100 block of Devil's Backbone Road. After a brief encounter, the subject pulled a handgun and pointed it at the deputy who then fired his own service weapon. The subject fled into woods. A perimeter is set and a K-9 unit is attempting to track the subject.

The subject is described as a black male in dark clothing. About 5'10"-5'11" with a medium build. It is unknown if the subject was struck.

As is the case with all investigations that involves deputies firing their weapons, SLED will be enroute to the scene. The investigation will be turned over to them.
