Teachers ‘work’ together to stay sharp

Lexington, SC - Following the lead of Fifth-Grade Teacher K. Nicole Dennis and Third-Grade Teacher Mary E. Lambert, faculty and staff at Lake Murray Elementary support each other when it comes to improving their health and well-being.

Dennis and Lambert launched Lake Murray in Action, or LiA, in 2016 to encourage faculty and staff to work out after school. People at all fitness levels meet every Tuesday and Friday. Exercises include a combination of aerobic exercises and muscle-strengthening activities.

Faculty and staff spending time on self-care follows the motto of “Sharpen the Saw,” the seventh Steven Covey habit pulled from the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” LMES implements the 7 Habits in multiple ways as a FranklinCovey The Leader in Me™ program Lighthouse School.

With more teachers participating each week, Dennis and Lambert consider LiA a success. Most importantly, the program fosters positive community across grade levels and among LMES staff members.

In addition to the Tuesday and Friday workouts, LMES PTA President Malia Heimbach teaches a yoga-style class in the Learning Commons every Wednesday after school for faculty and staff.
