Five Airport High standouts to be inducted Friday into Athletic Hall of Fame

September 22, 2017

West Columbia, SC - Five Airport High School athletes who made a name in their respective sports will be inducted Friday into the school’s Hall of Fame.

This year’s inductees were standouts in football, wrestling, baseball and softball, among other sports. They join other Airport High athletes and coaches who have received the honor since the first Hall of Fame class in 2004, among them standouts like Jimmy Stuckey, a defensive end at Airport who played for Clemson and the San Francisco 49ers; and Duce Staley, a wide receiver at Airport who played for the University of South Carolina, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers.

This year’s inductees are:

Jody Truesdale (class of 1977): Truesdale lettered in football, golf, track and wrestling. He was the state heavyweight champion his senior season, and served as captain of the 1977 wrestling team, which was undefeated. He attended The Citadel on a wrestling scholarship.

Al Morrow (class of 1982): Among Morrow’s honors as an Airport football player, he was Defensive Lineman of the Year (1980, 1981); a member of The Columbia Record All-Area Team and the Columbia Touchdown Club All-Area Team; and named Lineman of the Year by The State newspaper (1981). He was selected to participate in the South Carolina Shrine Bowl.

Kim Goodwin Spires (class of 1984): She played first base in softball as a freshman, receiving the Rookie Award, and as a sophomore, when Airport was undefeated Region, Upper State and 4A State Champions. Her junior year, she became a pitcher, and in her senior year, the Eagles were undefeated. She also played volleyball. She attended Spartanburg Methodist College on a softball scholarship and later transferred to Anderson College.

Brian Wiley (class of 1995): Wiley still ranks No. 1 in career baseball strikeouts and ERA in a season at Airport. He was selected All-Region from 1993-95, All-State in 1994-95, and played in the North/South All-Star game in 1995. Brian attended The Citadel, where he was the 1999 Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year. He was the 1999 Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year and led the Bulldogs to the regular season title and tournament crowns. He finished The Citadel with several school career records and still holds The Citadel’s career record for strikeouts (431), which is a Southern Conference record as well. He was drafted in the 15th round by the Boston Red Sox and inducted into The Citadel’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Brandon Waring (class of 2004): Waring still holds the single season baseball record for batting average and home runs. He was All-Region in 2003-04, and in 2004, he was Region Player of the Year, All-State 4A, and The State newspaper’s 4A Player of the Year. Waring played on scholarship at Wofford College where he was named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, along with Louisville Slugger, and ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-America and Baseball America 2nd Team All America honors. He holds five single season records at Wofford. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round and played pro ball for eight years. He was inducted into the Wofford Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.

The Airport High School Eagle Club will induct the five newest Hall of Fame members Friday during a 6:15 p.m. ceremony at the school, 1315 Boston Ave., West Columbia. A drop-in reception is set for 5:30 p.m. The inductees also will be recognized that night at Airport’s 7:30 p.m. home football game against Richland Northeast.
