Lexington County firefighters planning Fallen Firemen’s 5k run-walk for October
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - The Lexington County Fire Service is hosting the Fallen Firemen’s 5k run-walk for this year at the Lexington County Blowfish stadium. It'll be held on Oct. 7th beginning at 8 a.m. Each year, this run-walk helps to raise funds to support the Jeffery Vaden Chavis House at the Southeastern Burn institute in Augusta, Georgia.
According the website www.burnshurtwehelp.org/ChavisHouse, the Chavis House is a comfortable place where patients' family members may stay at no cost. Over the past decade, the Chavis House has been home to approximately 1,000 guests per year. This year, there have already been more than 1,300 family members and loved ones provided free lodging at the house.
This 40-bed guesthouse, which includes a kitchen and laundry facilities, ensures that families can be part of the care and recovery of their loved ones. Each day, volunteers from area churches bring a meal for the guests to enjoy.
The house is named in memory of Jeff Chavis who began his firefighting career as an 18-year old volunteer for the Round Hill Fire Station in Lexington County. On July 12, 2001, Jeff lost his life as a result of burns he suffered in the line of duty while fighting a residential fire.
The Chavis family led the effort to renovate the guest facility and continue to be active volunteers for Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation. In 2013 the Chavis House experienced a $135,000 renovation with new flooring, paint and furniture. It truly feels like a home-away-from-home.
Now, you can help with the expenses of maintaining the Chavis House by participating in the upcoming event.
