One dead in afternoon wreck on South Lake Drive near Food Lion

Red Bank, SC (Paul Kirby) One person has died after a vehicle and a motorcycle collided on South Lake Drive near the Food Lion at Platt Springs Road. One of the units involved caught fire and burned in the lanes headed southeast toward Pelion. The accident happened just before 4:00 p.m.

One vehicle involved had a fuel tank in its bead that spilled gas feeding the fire. Units from the Lexington County Fire Service quickly put the fire out, but haz-mat technicians were on the scene and were communicating with the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control about how they would deal with the spill.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher had personnel enroute to the scene from her office. There were also Lexington County Sheriff Deputies there as well as state troopers from the SCHP. They will investigate the wreck, and Mrs. Fisher’s office will assist by determining the cause of death of the motorist that was killed.

The coroner has asked many times that people do not share vehicle descriptions from the accident in the news or on social media before she has time to properly notify families of their loved one’s death. In accordance with that request, we also ask that you do not do that here, or on any of The Ledger’s social media post. That especially includes the name of the deceased. We will release the name of the person who has passed once that person’s name is officially released by the coroner.
