Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – One person has died following a crash during the morning commute Friday. The crash occurred sometime around 7:30 a.m. on I-20 west near the 57 mm.
The fire service responded along with EMS, and law enforcement from several agencies including the SCHP. Even before they arrived on the scene, callers were saying that a vehicle had overturned, and at least one injured person was in the roadway.
Traffic began backing up quickly, and first responders reported that they had to fight traffic back toward South Lake Drive almost immediately after getting on at the 55 ramps. The first units to arrive reported that all lanes in one direction were blocked.
Law enforcement began detouring vehicle off the interstate in order to get traffic flowing again as rescuers worked on the scene. This continued until the lanes were cleared and the interstate was reopened.
According to Lexington County Coroner Fisher, Mrs. Kristine C. Hoover, 49, of Lexington was killed in the accident. Mrs. Hoover, the driver of one vehicle, struck another vehicle while changing lanes then struck the barricade, causing her vehicle to overturn. Mrs. Hoover, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene due to multiple traumatic injuries sustained in the accident.
The two passengers of Mrs. Hoover’s vehicle were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle sustained only minor injuries.
An investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is ongoing.
Because there was a fatality involved, investigators will be on the scene for some time and may even return to that location over the coming days.
