Irmo Fire District says goodbye to Commissioner Donald Crain

October 7, 2017

US Navy, Highway Patrol veteran laid to rest Tuesday

Irmo, SC (James Bowers) The Irmo Fire District is mourning the loss of one of its commissioners. 73-year-old Donald Crain, a lifelong servant of the community who spent decades in the field of public safety, passed away Saturday. A memorial service was held Tuesday in Crain’s hometown of Travelers Rest.

Though Crain had never been a firefighter himself, he spent three decades as a Highway Patrolman. Irmo Fire Chief Mike Sonefeld said during an interview this week that Crain’s background was a huge asset to IFD’s operation. “He had the ability to see things from outside of the fire service, which was very helpful,” Sonefeld said. Sonefeld added that Crain’s experience in recruiting and retention during his law enforcement career was of great benefit to the Irmo Fire District.

Crain’s involvement in the community did not end with IFD. According to a published obituary, the longtime Midland’s resident was active in the Irmo SERTOMA Club, an organization dedicated to helping those with communication disabilities. Crain was also involved with the Irmo Chamber of Commerce.

Sonefeld says that while no one will ever “fill the void”, he hopes that future appointees to the commissioner role will bring the same sense of civic-mindedness and leadership ability that Crain brought to the table. Crain’s legacy of community involvement through his selfless service to his fellow man over his life is an enduring one. He will be remembered for his contributions to the area and state, and certainly will be missed.
