Home destroyed by fire on Sturkie Lane near Gaston
Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) A small home was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning on Sturkie Lane just off Irvin Jumper Street east of Gaston. The fire was dispatched at approximately 7:53 a.m.
First arriving crews found smoke and flames coming from the small, well maintained home. They quickly pulled their attack lines, and as soon as enough manpower arrived on the scene, they mounted their aggressive fire attack. The firefighters found that the flames had extended into the roof area of the home, and as they would knock it down in one spot, it would pop back out in another. They were eventually able to pull enough of the ceiling away to expose the fire and put it out.
Eventually manpower came from as far away as Oak Grove to allow the original fire crews to rehab. First response units included the teams from Gaston, Swansea, Sandy Run, SharpesHill, and several other stations. Tankers had to carry water into the fire from a hydrant in the town of Gaston because there were none in proximity to the home.
The firefighters were assisted by an EMS crew from Lexington County also. Another ambulance responded to offer care to someone, not reported to be one of the firefighters, who was having some type of medical issue.
The home was destroyed by the fire and the residents were displaced. The fire service hasn’t said how the fire started.
