Teacher’s family history brings museum to life

December 6, 2017

Lexington, SC - Fourth-grade students at Lake Murray Elementary studied the Colonial time period this fall with help from a teacher’s family history.

As part of the curriculum, Fourth-Grade Teacher Kim T. Nunnery and parent volunteer Rhonda Hamilton created a Colonial Museum for LMES students to visit. Nunnery brought items from her great-grandmother’s collection to create the museum. LMES also received items through an educational grant.

All students received an invitation to explore the museum, which allowed them to make real connections with what life was like for children their age during Colonial times. Classroom discussions centered on the settlers’ way of life and how families functioned during this time period.

Teachers and volunteers prepared interactive stations for the students, including knot tying and making dreamcatchers, candles, ice cream, and butter.
